Autoresponders are not quite the set and forget technology that some would have you believe. Without really understanding how to create effective and timely messages, and how to develop autoresponder material that motivates, your messages aren't going to reach your potential clients or associates. Using an autoresponder message effectively starts with your very first message, and understanding how the entire system works starts with taking the time to check out the information the autoresponder service has provided for you.
While I am certainly not the type to read the directions and manuals that come with appliances or new electronic equipment until there is a problem, the mistakes I make in the privacy of my own home are mine to make. The mistakes I make with an autoresponder system is bound to meet the eyes of everyone on my list, and that is just not a pretty sight.

To some entrepreneurs and business owners, the answer to this question might be, "it doesn't matter --publicity is publicity and I'll take all I can get." True to a degree, but the smart entrepreneur knows that there is a strong difference between product and business publicity and their respective effects on your bottom line.
Sure, the bottom line is to create consumer/industry awareness of the product or business and increase sales. But how you go about increasing that awareness, that brand recognition, can mean the difference between publicity and obscurity. Determining which type of publicity campaign you need is really all about timing.
What I recommend to my clients is what I call "Diversified Publicity". Just as stockbrokers tell their clients to diversify their portfolios, the same holds true for publicity. A diversified publicity portfolio is a vibrant and active portfolio. What I mean by Diversified Publicity is creating different publicity angles based on your business' life cycle and timing those pitches to the media for optimum exposure.

As a business owner, no doubt you've often thought about the question as to how much you should spend on advertising, and where exactly you should spend it. For most people who own small businesses, these questions simply give you more headaches beyond those simply suffered in the normal everyday operation of your business.
No Simple Answers
In fact, there aren't any simple answers as to how much you should spend on your advertisement.
Depending on your business, there are those who suggest that you should spend anywhere from 4 to 10% of your gross receipts on advertising.
Of course, the conundrum is, it's likely that your business is not going to survive unless you have a continuing flow of new customers. However, it's not likely, either, that you're going to get those new customers without spending at least something on advertising and get the word out about your business.
